Often the term obedience connotes drudgery, lack of freedom, and having to do things we re-ally don’t want to do. That’s not what Jesus has in mind. When you love someone, it’s easy to do what pleases them.
My wife loves Christmas lights. Is putting up Christmas lights something I would choose to do if I were single? No. It is not. (And this picture here is not my house.) But I love putting up Christmas lights for her. I love seeing the smile it puts on her face, and that makes me happy in the process. There is motivation there for me and it becomes something I want to do.
In the same way, Jesus doesn’t come at us with a hammer when he asks us for obedience. He wants the kind of obedience that flows from a loving relationship with him: “If you love me, you will obey my commandments.” John 14:15 NET.
