Growth? Or Control?
As a coach of missional leaders, one of the competencies I lean on all the time is what I call “organizational sustainability.” That’s the ability to help leaders develop and adapt sustainable systems as their missional ministry grows. Essentially, that means managing as you’re growing so you can keep growing.
If missional leaders want to structure their ministries to grow, that means giving up some measure of control. Brandon Cox shares some good insights about this idea in his blog entry “You Can Have Growth, Or You Can Have Control.” We can either structure for control, putting gatekeepers in place, or we can structure to grow. We have to decide how much we want of each, because they don’t go together.
