- Be the feet of Jesus
- Be the hands of Jesus
- Be the voice of Jesus
Serving others may be the most versatile of all 12 of the areas we’re looking at in this series. Jesus said it best: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matt. 25:35-36) There are limitless opportunities to serve in this broken world of ours. We can serve on our own, we can serve in teams, we can serve consistently once a week, we can serve spontaneously as needs arise, we can serve from our giftedness, we can serve outside of our giftedness. It’s all good.
What ties together all of these ways is that we are incarnating Jesus. When we serve others we are representing Jesus to them. We are acting as his feet, his hands, his voice. When we are the feet of Jesus, we go where he wants us to go. We cross cultures, we cross the street, we cross out of our comfort zones. We walk through Samaria instead of around it. When we are the hands of Jesus, we offer a cup of cold water, we clean, serve and hold a child’s hand. When we are the voice of Jesus, we speak truth, bring encouragement, hope, and comfort, and stand up for the oppressed. In all these ways we live incarnationally as Jesus in the world.
