Lately I’ve been thinking through how Jesus made disciples, based on my observations of scripture. I’ll post one insight per day here. You can find all of them by searching “How Jesus made disciples” on my blog.
Jesus made disciples of ordinary people, not superstars.
His disciples were fishermen, not rabbinical students. They were tax collectors and the poor, widows and prostitutes. The people who became followers of Jesus in the gospel accounts were comprised simply of the people who were at hand. These were the people who were around and available.
What’s the take away for us? Discipleship is for everyone. It’s not the fast track or the honors course — it’s for ordinary people… everyone.
Biblical passages to consider: Luke 19:1-10, Luke 7:11-17, Matthew 8:5-13
