As we celebrate our independence in the US today, I’ve found myself thinking of the opposite: dependence. Although independence– the ability to go it alone and not have to rely on anyone other than yourself– is what’s valued in my own culture, the humble recognition of dependence is what’s valued in God’s Kingdom.
May we each remember who we truly depend on for our freedom (Galatians 5:1).
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
God blesses those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
God blesses those who are humble,
for they will inherit the whole earth.
God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,
for they will be satisfied.
God blesses those who are merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
God blesses those whose hearts are pure,
for they will see God.
God blesses those who work for peace,
for they will be called the children of God.
God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” (Matthew 5:3-10)
I was thinking the same thing, talking about “Dependence Day,” Sunday. But you’ve taken it one step further, “in-dependence!” Thank you.
